Rowing into Silence

A slow return to a very old way of being on this coast.

Introduction
Season
May – September
Duration
A half-day (approx. 4 h)
Group
Up to 6 guests

Row silently across the tranquil waters of Vatnfjorden, departing from the quiet shoreline at Sandsletta. Surrounded by mountains, Arctic light and complete silence, this is an intimate journey into one of Northern Austvågøy's most peaceful coastal landscapes.

The Story

The Nordlandsbåt is the oldest working boat design in Norway — a direct descendant of the Viking ships. It rows lightly, sits well in a wave, and carries silence unusually well.

You launch from a quiet shoreline at Sandsletta, and the coast opens slowly into Vatnfjorden. There is rowing, and there is not-rowing. There is talking, and, more often, there is not. A carefully prepared lunch is eaten on board or on an uninhabited islet.

This is not about performance. It is about slowing down. It is about experiencing the Arctic coastline exactly as generations before you did — with your own hands on the same kind of oars.

What makes this unique
  • 01A hand-built traditional Nordlandsbåt kept alive by the farm.
  • 02A living piece of Norwegian coastal heritage — you take part, you do not watch.
  • 03Silence, weather, and lunch — nothing else on the schedule.
  • 04Small — six guests only, ever.
